Estimating the correct amount of paint required for a particular room need not be complicated. The first step is to correctly measure the area to be painted. Firstly measure the distance around the room, and the ceiling height to be painted. Apply these measurements to the our online calculator below and the answer will be correct to within half a litre.

Please note: The amounts shown are based on one coat only and do not include doors and windows etc.

Measure the distance around the room:
(in metres)
Measure the height of the ceiling:
(in metres)
Paint requirement for walls:
litres
Paint requirement for ceiling:
litres

For porous or rough surfaces, add approximately 20% to the first coat quantity. Complicated mouldings and fittings will require extra paint. Remember to measure doors, windows and other areas that may not be painted (width x height) and to subtract the square metreage from the overall job. On average a four litre can will cover approximately 64 square metres.
